In 1962, Ford was nowhere in road racing. They had no appropriate car, and Mustang was still two years away. Ford did, however, have a new, lightweight V8 engine. AC Cars in England had a good sports car, the AC Ace, but no engine to put in it when the Bristol went out of production. Carroll Shelby connected the two circumstances, the AC Cobra was born, and soon after Shelby American. By 1963, The AC Cobra, “Powered by Ford”, was doing what Ford hoped it would do: trounce the Corvettes. In fact, Cobra was the dominant car in U.S. road racing for the next five years.
